Taking Charge of Your Health

hey y’all welcome back Mandy with my
hectic life pets where we talk about all things pet and putt related and today I
wanted to go over with you my top five most common fish diseases and how you
can spot them so first off we have ik also known as white spots disease it is
a small protozoan that will attach itself to your fish
now when fish are first infected a lot of times you will see that they are like
rubbing up against ornaments rubbing against rubbing themselves down on the
gravel trying to basically dislodge the parasite they look very uncomfortable
fish that are infected with ick also tend to look like they’ve been sprinkled
with a bunch of salt like the named white spots disease suggests they are
covered in small little white specks now there are many different treatments
available that you can use as directed at all the different stores one of my
favorite remedies that I have found to be super effective so far has been the
new life spectrum egg shield now it only works if your fish will eat it the fish
that I have gotten in that were infected with it if they were willing to eat it
they were it free and healthy within a couple of weeks it is an alternative
option again though if your fish will eat it and it’s not super cheap and a
lot of times it’s harder to find so you might end up having to buy it online but
with the fish that have eaten it I’ve had 100% success rate with curing of egg
and not losing my fish so next up we have thin tail and mouth rot like the
name suggests your fish will appear like their tail is almost melting or fins are
starting to get frayed and their mouth almost looks like it’s rotting away
it looks like they’re just swimming around open mouth and it can make it
very difficult for fish to swim and eat now fin and mouth rot are usually caused
by either poor water conditions or if your fish got nipped then it’s going to
cause a bacterial infection which is what causes that rotten kind of look to
your fish now this is a bacterial infection that tends to come from poor
water quality or if your fish is getting picked on or maybe you even purchased it
that way this one is super easy to treat now there are antibiotics or you can
also use malefics to help with treating your aquarium I’ve noticed over the
years really just doing a lot more frequent water changes sometimes as
often as a water change every day along with adding a little bit of aquarium
salt seems to get rid of the disease just fine as long as it hasn’t gone too
far and third we have fungal infections now fungal infections tend to be pretty
obvious you’ll see what looks like white fluffy cotton appearing on your fish if
this is left untreated the fungus will continue to eat away at your fish and
this can also lead to secondary bacterial infections now products like
pima fix can help with the fungus and malefics can help if there is a
secondary bacterial infection now this disease similar to thin rot can be
brought on by poor water quality or the fish getting attacked by another fish or
even injuring itself on an ornament that is too sharp and should probably be
removed from the tank now number four is dropsy dropsy unfortunately quite
frequently is a fish killer dropsy is a bacterial infection of the
kidneys and quite frequently causes renal failure in your fish now dropsy is
often recognized as your fish is looking very bloated
and the scales begin to kind of spike up and have this sort of weird porcupinie
appearance to them now there are antibiotics that can be used to treat
this along with frequent water changes but unfortunately because a lot of times
it does end up in causing renal failure the success rate is not very high in
treating dropsy now number five is velvet similarly to egg velvet is a
small parasite that will attach itself to your fish fish will tend to become
lethargic and start rubbing themselves against things to try to dislodge the
parasites and they will start to get a rust like appearance all over their body
in severe cases you might also noticed clamped fins lethargy and labored
breathing in your fish one of the most common treatments for velvet is shutting
off the tank lights and covering the tank to put the tank in total darkness
along with raising the temperature of the water and using a copper based
medication velvet is extremely common amongst fish and typically pretty easy
to get rid of so what are some of the diseases that you’ve come across in your
aquarium and what methods did you use to treat it that we’re successful let us
know in the comments below because we love hearing all avails information and
experiences to help us all grow in our aquarium hobby well that’s all for

100 thoughts on “5 Common Fish Diseases And How To Spot And Treat Them

  1. I got 3 goldfish with a huge amount of the white spots and their fins are all ripped. I thought it was the bigger one picking on the little ones but the next day his were all ripped to

  2. I have two bettas, both are sick with different symptoms.
    1. The first fish has symptoms of labored breathing, darting, slightly yellowing, lethargy, and ‘falling’ when he’s resting at the bottom of the tank, and resting vertically at the bottom.

    2. The second fish has a faded dark coloring, floats and turns to the side at the top of the water (almost looks like he’s dead), labored breathing, and hides behind his heater.

They both have no trouble with eating however. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong and how I can help them? I’ve been trying to treat them for forever now and everything is so confusing and I can’t get them to get better.

  3. The illustration you used for dropsy is actually a perfectly healthy variety of fancy goldfish called a crown pearlscale. It looks like it has dropsy but it does not.

  4. This is great, I’ve had 5 fish die recently including a betta and now my other two bettas are going down hill fast. I’ve been struggling eith this for a little over a month now. They are showing so many signs but aren’t reacting well to any treatments so far.

  5. My beta fishes scales and gills are blackish. Is this normal because this has been going on for a while. No growth but I'm just worried. Is this the rotting disease?

  6. I have a shunbunkin that I got from a fair. I'm just wondering that of his back is sticking over his head like a hump does this mean he is sick? (I know this sounds pretty dumb lol, but I just want to check )

  7. My betta fish has formed 2 white spots in his eyes (fairly small in both eyes) and he is forming pink patches all over his body, save the fins and tails. What does he have?

  8. I have a angel fish that died before i even noticed a change and it looked like it's scales under it's fins were melting away … what does that mean?

  9. How about the fish that bite or eats the smaller one? They killed some of my cutest fishes in the aquarium so what do I do?

  10. Hi I have a dwarf gourami he has what I can only explain to be a small pink tumour close to his eye (it's not the same as any of the diseases on this list) I can notice it getting slightly bigger everyday CAN ANYONE HELP

  11. I hope someone can help me, one of my goldfish has literal circles INSIDE his body. They aren’t sticking out or anything, but each day more are appearing on his body. They are just dark spots inside his body you can see when he’s in the light. Can someone plz identify it?

  12. My oranda goldfish has a red dot on his head, it just showed up. Please help me figure out what it is, I’m very concerned😔He has a 20 gallon tank . He also started to develop brownish , reddish veins on his tail.

  13. I had a perfectly healthy tank of cichlids, 7 in a 75 gal. Been that way for over a year now. I added a new fish last week and believe he introduced something that's killing my fish. I've lost one, and others have it now. It's almost like a whitish film over the fish and there eyes. Seems to be patchy on them and even small strands hanging from them. Any idea what could be? Trying despritly to stop it…thanks for your help!

  14. So, I have a tank with glofish danios. One of my pink fish has a bump on it's side out of nowhere. It's not white, it's just the same color as my fish and doesn't seem to be causing any pain. I know this isn't a substitute for a vet but I was just wondering if you knew anything about it?

  15. Well i have a African Cichlid and he has red spots disease quite often but he usually looks like he is gonna die. Just do a 50 percent water change and put melafix in and my fish is doing pretty good.

  16. My goldfish lost a scale, before that he had a red sore on his mouth that went away and looked like a small piece of flesh hanging for a few days after and I noticed he's been swimming tilted here and there, but not constantly
He's the only one in a 90gal tank, no pineconing. Any thoughts are appreciated

  17. Quick question. I have one fish that has a fungus infection and I’m going to be treating it so will it be ok if i treat my whole tank even though the rest of my fish are fine?

  18. Hi, those remedies are great. Not to rain on your parade though, some people have fish that are sensitive to copper like corydorus catfish, so anther remedy would be better. Also i have a planted tank so i cant turn the lights off if my fish has that problem in the future. But thanks all the same for making the vid.

  19. My betta developed just a few white spots over his head and no where else the day after getting him, is this still ich?

  20. I just found out my poor betta got a fungus infection, I need to get some treatment medicine tomorrow at the fish store. ☹️he looks so sick.

  27. My guppy named sherlock just got dropsy. He has no sign of bloating yet, but I did see some very unevident raised scales. I think I may have caught this at an early stage. Does anyone know if dropsy can actually be cured? It has been said that dropsy cannot be 100% cured mandatorily. It will always discourage the fish again at some point. Is this true? Also, does FURAN 2 help with treating dropsy? Im planning on getting some Epsom salt. Pls reply soon! Thank you!

  37. Hey, does anyone know what might be wrong with my fish? It’s my first time having fish other than a goldfish in a bowl. Due to a family emergency I had 1 neon tetra (died the first night to what I now know was fin rot due to a bite before I got her) a pleco and 2 zebra danios, they were in schools (but the pleco) before they passed down to me but slowly they died out. But one of my zebra danios seems to have really red open fins and the top bit of his tale is droopy and he seems to be a lot more distant from the other danio, does anyone know what might be going on? I know I’ve had him only 4 days but I’ve grown quite close to him. Please help me

  42. I am looking for informatiom regarding black smudge. A black spot appeared on my goldfish Celeste…any advice? Thanks!

  43. Thank you so much for this video!
I have a single red betta in a small tank. around a week ago she started to slow down and her fins started to get clamped, then she just stopped moving at all and just stayed still gasping for air at the water surface, i saw some videos that said to buy some paracure but i didn't find any locally and it seemed like she was gonna die if i waited and ordered online.. then i saw your video around 3 days ago… Her symptoms matched closely to Velvet so i did what u said and put her in complete darkness and hoped for the best. The next morning she gained some of her colour back and her face was a bit cleaner from the rust looking thing.. the next day she started moving but she still didn't eat. Today Morning she was acting totally fine (edit: she still has some discoloration on her face tho), but she ate for the first time in 5 days. Im not sure if i should take her out to light yet.. how long should i wait before putting her under light? Thank you again you really helped me out! 🙂

  44. I don't know what it is , my fish has some white deposites on their fins and I don't know what treatment to go with , can you please suggest ??

  45. Partial water change. About 20%. Be sure to add aquarium salt and follow the instructions on how much salt to add when you perform a water change. Monitor your fish and check your water quality and condition. I suggest getting a freshwater master test kit. It definitely helps out and you be surprised on what you discover. Hope this helps. ✌🏻

  46. Omg 😮 I’m a horrible fish owner, I need to find somebody that actually knows what there doing I feel like I’ve seen every one of these in my fish except for dropsy. However I did have a fin nipper I guess that doesn’t help regarding bacterial infections.
