In Ayurveda they have classified people into
3 types, 3 types of constitutions of the body and mind. One is Pitta, where the fire element is more
predominant, one is Vata where the space and air element is more predominant, and one is
Kapha where the earth and water element is more predominant. It’s very interesting to see, because this
whole Creation is made up of the five elements, but some might be more and some might be less. For example, a person where the Pitta, the
fire is more, their body will be more warm, they have a medium body build, their intellect
will be sharp. For a Kapha person the body will be a little
more hefty, even if they don’t eat much, they will be a little more slow, but mind
is more settled also. A Vata person is very thin, they will be more
restless, even the mind is more restless. They will start many new things but they will
not finish it. So like that, if you see, by knowing about
your own Prakriti, your own constitution, which an Ayurvedic doctor can tell you, you
will know what type of work you are good at, how your relationships with people are, what
food is good for you, what daily routine is good for you, to keep the body balanced, to
keep the body healthy and the mind peaceful. And this is not just on the gross, but even
on the subtle levels. Because Ayurveda also talks about the subtle
elements, the Tanmatras, which allow us to perceive the world around us, the five elements. It is said that at the time of Creation, out
of the five subtle elements, the Tanmatras, the Tamasic aspect became the physical and
gross elements: earth water fire air and ether, space. The Rajasic aspect became our organs of action:
that which allows us to grasp, to speak, all these things. And the Sattvic aspect became our sense organs:
the ears, the eyes, the nose, or rather the ability to hear, the ability to see, the ability
to touch. So that subtle element in us allows us to
perceive the subtle element in the world around us. And when we know this, when you become aware,
it is very interesting, because that means that a person in whom the fire element is
more, a Pitta person, their perception of sight will be more, because that Tanmatra
is more in them. In the same way, a Kapha person, in whom the
earth and water element is more their sense of smell and taste will be more predominant,
more strong, more acute. A person in whom the air and space element is more, their sense of hearing will be more predominant. So that means if three people, Vata Pitta
and Kapha Prakriti, would be going for a picnic and afterwards you ask them to describe the
picnic, how was it, what did you remember, what did you feel? A Pitta person will tell you more about what
it looked like: the colours. Oh it was so beautiful, the green forest,
etc. A Kapha person will tell you: the smell was
very nice. A Vata person will tell you more about the
sound: there was the sound of the birds. So that way if you see, all these things are
connected. The world around us, our perception and our
interaction with the world is very intricately linked with our Prakriti, what we are made
up of. So learning about that is a very valuable
thing and this is a beautiful gift which Ayurveda has given to this world. So when you have an opportunity, find out,
learn a little more. It will give you so much insight about yourself,
why you do the things you do, why you like the things you like, and how you can live
a balanced, happy and healthy life.
