Taking Charge of Your Health

Hi everyone, welcome back to another edition
of Ask the ND. I’m Dr. Jeremy Wolf. As many of you are aware, we’re exposed to
a variety of germs and other organisms throughout our daily lives. In today’s episode, I want to teach you about
the body’s natural defense system that not only helps to fight off these infections,
but also keeps you healthy. The immune system is a group of cells, organs,
and tissues which works together to protect you from bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. In order for your immune system to work properly,
everything has to work together to help heal you from injuries or to resist and throw off
sickness. If your immune system isn’t functioning properly,
auto immune conditions, such as exzema and frequent infections and many other problems
can occur. One of the best things you can do to help
support your immune system is to have a healthy lifestyle. This includes, a diet which is rich in fruits
and vegetables and limits fried or processed foods. Get the recommended 7-10 hours of sleep per
night. Limit stress wheneber possible. Exercise and maintain a heathy weight and
wash yiur hands frequently to help to reduce exposure to infections. Let’s talk about a variety of supplements
which may help to improvfe your immune system. Here’s the rundown. Vitamin C is probably one of the most well
known and best vitamins for a heathy immune system. Parts of the immune system use vitamin C to
perform their functions and vitamin C also energizes the immune system. This is why if you’re deficient in vitamin
C, you may be at an increased risk for getting sick. Indiviiducals may require miore vitaminc C
when they are sick. A way to know if you’ve taken too much vitamin
C is that you may develop loose stools. Receptors for vitamin D have been found on
immune cells throughtout the immune system. This means vitamin D mayb be crucial for activinting
our immune defenses and defidiency may lend to a weaker immune response, making you more
susceptible to infections. Probiotics help to maintain the lining of
the intestine, which acts as a barrier against infection. The probiotics help to stimulate certain parts
of the immune system, which may be helpful with immune conditions such as ezcema. Roughly 80% of our immune system is found
inside of our gut. So if our guts aren’t functioning properly,
our immune system may also not function properly. Elderberry is anti viral herb in addition
to those properties, it helps activate the immune system which means if taken at the
first sign of illness, elderberry may help shorten the illness and lessen the symptoms. Zinc is an essential mineral to the immune
system, it helps with the overall running of the immune system and a deficiency in zinc
may make you more susceptible to getting sick. Many of these supplements can be taken individually
or together as a formula. Remember, it’s always important to check with
your healthcare provider before starting any herbs or supplements due to the potential
for side effects an interqadtions. For more information on individual supplements
