Taking Charge of Your Health

my name is Ellsworth Wareham I’m a cardiothoracic surgeon and Practice that is my specialty all my professional life I’m 98 years of age and I practiced the cardiothoracic surgery until I was 95 I have first try to be active by working around my yard Doing my pruning of my bushes, and I mow my own lawn So I try to get a little exercise doing that as far as my Dietary program is concerned. I happen to be a vegan. I’ve been a vegan now for about Half my life. I think that’s a healthy form of nutrition I try to maintain the calm approach to the problems of life and not worry and fret over problems that come along I get a good night’s sleep and if I feel like it, I take a nap during the day So I really try to be caught as careful as I can and preserving what energy I have I quit work when I was 95 And because of this of course I attracted some publicity from the national geographic and incidentally the people I’ve worked with very much wanted me to continue but I felt I should spend a little more time at home with my family I could be working right now. I could do anything that I did then and now 98 But I picked 95 as an arbitrary time when I would quit I have always been inclined to be a vegetarian my folks were farmers and We had quite a bit of meat available But it never appealed to me to eat animal products I never did drink milk by the glass I would use it on my cereal and Of course my mother and then later on my wife, would use it in cooking So I was naturally inclined toward a vegetable type of diet But I was concerned about the adequacy of the nutrition when I found out that I could get by…by taking a little vitamin B12 of course I then became entirely Vegan and I think that it has been a very fine form of nutrition. It’s a little extreme to tell a person who is using flesh foods and that you’re going to take everything entirely away from them But I have…when I was in practice in medicine I would tell the patients that the veget… vegetable based diet was the healthy way to go and as much as possible we keep away from the animal products it has to be something that the person wants to cooperate in and people are very sensitive about what they eat now you can talk to people about exercising and you can talk to people about relaxation and good mental attitude and life things like that and They will accept that But you talk to them about what they’re eating and people are very sensitive about that if… if an individual is willing to listen I will try to explain to them on a scientific basis of how I think it’s better for them I read a statement in the wall Street Journal last year. I think it was in January of last year that I thought was quite significant, and it was this That all tastes are acquired except for breast milk now this means you see that if you as a parent Will start your child on a healthy nutrition They’ll like it But an individual let us say who is old even my age Can change their taste buds there are a lot of people that take too much salt and Their food they think is flat unless they have a lot of salt in it, but if you will diminish the amount of salt gradually after a while they won’t know the difference and in a matter of three months or so you can do a great deal to change your taste habits if you are willing to do it if a person is willing to go through the change and give himself time he will enjoy foods that are healthy for
him as you know cholesterol is the chief problem you have to be concerned about as far as development coronary occlusion and coronary disease is concerned if your cholesterol is under a hundred and forty Very very seldom that anybody has a heart attack with a cholesterol of 140 now the factors that Influence your cholesterol are things that we should know about and one of the factors is the amount of saturated fat and most animal fat is saturated Whereas the vegetable fat is unsaturated or mono saturated So you have to avoid the animal fats Now there are those scientists including Dr.Colin Campbell of Cornell University That say that animal proteins will also affect your cholesterol not just the fat in other words you pour off the cream off your milk and drink the skim milk even the casein of the milk will raise your cholesterol and then people say also high intake of sugar will affect your cholesterol so if you can keep your cholesterol under 140 Your chances of developed coronary disease are very small exercise is beneficial in reducing cholesterol But if you’re taking in a considerable amount of saturated fat, you can’t exercise enough to lower it as much as it should be lowered the easiest way to get your cholesterol down is to watch what you eat Now you can lower your cholesterol by exercise, but now I’m talking about no 15 or 20 milligrams something like that, but if you get on a vegan diet which is a little fat you can drop it much more when we went abroad We had an open heart surgery team that this would be maybe a dozen to two dozen people that would go with team and do open heart surgery in overseas countries, but this was back 50 years ago You see when open heart surgery is first starting out now There’s no no need to do anything like that now most of the surgery we did when we went abroad it was for congenital heart disease that is defects of the heart With which a person is born Holes in the heart and malformations the valves fourth and the other was valvular heart disease due to rheumatic fever We didn’t do very many coronary cases when we were oversea coronary disease is a disease of the more developed countries That’s being a little bit discriminatory I presume but America undoubtedly in my opinion has been the leader in the development of coronary disease I mean in development of treatment of heart disease and I think has also led out in the research of cause disease We have a lot of information in this country Which is not being applied Which would greatly reduce the incidence we have of coronary disease. I don’t know whether you’ve been following the news but Mayor Bloomberg of New York as you know made certain laws establishing the size of the soft drinks which you can buy and so forth so on and he has other areas in which he is also enforcing by law. Healthful habits many people question whether you should have your individual freedom limited by laws, but there’s no question about it that there are certain things that we could implement in this country to greatly reduce heart disease you know the Cleveland Clinic is the world’s great center for coronary artery disease Coronary angiography the study of the coronary arteries was developed at Cleveland Clinic and you can’t diagnose where the stoppages in your coronary arteries without coronary angiography now we have some newer methods, but that’s still sort of the gold Standard and Dr. Esselstyn of The Cleveland Clinic He says that coronary artery disease does not need to exist and it doesn’t need to progress and he does it on a low-fat vegan diet there have been only two people in the world that I know of they’ve demonstrated that they can arrest and reverse coronary artery disease and they are Dr. Dean Ornish of San Francisco and Dr. Esselstyn of the Cleveland clinic and they both did it on a low-fat Vegan diet if you would go on a low fat vegan diet and you exercise the chances of developing coronary disease will be very low get that cholesterol under a hundred and forty and you can my cholesterol is a hundred and seventeen If I have some pain in my chest, I know it is not the coronary disease maybe due to some something in my esophagus Hiatus Hernia from my stomach or something else, but it’s not coronary disease because of a hundred and seventeen I’m not going to develop it Anybody can do those things very simple

  1. On Veggie Channel you'll find more than 1 thousand instructional videos. This is a political free channel, please subscribe and share our videos. Thank you 🙏

  2. Longevity has little if nothing to do with nutrition. My grandmother died at 96 in clear mind and she was rarely taken ill in her entire life. She was not even a vegetarian. My uncle is 94 in perfect health and he"s still enjoying his daily walks of 2-3 km. He has never been on a special diet. Both of them knew very little about nutritional facts.

  3. And there are 98yr people that eat meat so what?

No-one is saying there can't be vegans and meat eaters. Oh wait you say there are….mmmm it's vegans saying we should be vegan.

    No piss off.

  4. I tried it for 9 days. My sciatic nerve pain from my back went away. My acid reflux stopped and my joint pain in my feet stopped. I have RA and felt awesome no joint pain. Now I know its not just BS. It was hard at first but then it got easier. Forks over knives has an awesome magazine with recipes

  5. Back on track for 33 days now–please track my progress here and lets help each other https://youtu.be/8KL-oiL37H0

  6. he did not live this long because he was Vegan , he has good genes .nothing to do with being vegan .. for Okinawans live to 105/10 and their diet comprises mainly of pork and fish . but no junk food . the fact that he takes B12 is proof that meat and grass fed meat is the medicine of tomorrow . vegans are not healthy

  7. But, what if you built up enough stores from animal fat and protein so that by the time you were 50, the vegan diet was good for you?

  8. There is a variety of factors impacting health and life expectancy (genetics, lifestyle, healthcare system quality, etc.). Of course, diet too but it is just one element of the equation. Also, trying to promote a specific diet just showing a single aged, healthy individual is so disingenuous. What should we say about Southern European countries then? Countries like Italy, Portugal, Greece and Croatia have a mixed diet which includes meat, fish and dairy products… And guess what? They have some of the oldest population in Europe. I have nothing against your diet, but I really find disgusting the ideological approach you use in promoting it. You're just dishonest.

  9. this grandpa looks beyond death already. still claims he could do anything he ever did. what a farce, typical vegan delusional propaganda.

  10. First of all my mom is 97 years old and each a lot of meat Ann
is not a vegan and drinks milk everyday it is very very healthy.  if you eat meat that is grass fed which is the
animals natural diet that meat contains lots of nutrients that are good for you
and give you strength.  new fatty acids
in grass fed meat and meet like salmon that just wild will give you long chain
fatty acids that you cannot get in vegetables and fruits.  doctor Weston price travel the world and
examined close to 20 different cultures all around the world and took
photographs, interviewed indigenous people, and found that meat eaters had more
stamina and more strength than vegetable eaters only.  this guy's idea of cholesterol causing heart
attacks and strokes is not only ridiculous but bad science.  in fact I'd like to see is scientific proof that
high cholesterol causes heart attacks and strokes because there is no such study
that shows that.  if you read the so
called China study you will see that all of that was a very corrupt writing because
they used animals that were herbivores that cannot eat meat because they don't
make hydrochloric acid in their stomach to digest.  as far as salt this guy needs his head
examined because there is not a single study on blood pressure that says that
salt access old causes a heart attack or stroke.  there is a correlation showing what he is
describing but there's no causation.  dirty
electricity in MW energi are far more a problem causing heart attacks
especially myocardial infarction's.I wish people like this will get off of
there high horse and do some real scientific research and study the world would
    be a much better place.

  11. I love love love love this video! Great information and so true! When I made the leap from ultra processed foods to vegan, I had to "retrain" my taste buds to enjoy real, whole foods again, and the best part is that it only took a 2-3 weeks, not months. Unfortunately, US made factory food is created to be hyper-palatable (excessive sugar and salt) so that we purposely overeat and destroy our health while big food companies make a ton of money.

  12. I think it was a bit irresponsible for him to still be working untill 95 though, he could have dropped dead during surgery

  13. there are other omnivores can live 100 years old as well. It's not about vegan but artificial junk food.

  14. When ¡ was a teenager in my beach apartments there was a 103 years old doctor living alone, doing everyday his homework & totally independent,.. that’s vitality¡¡¡

  15. I believe in scientific base
    Science comes from Hindu religion
Ancestors are not jester. Scientifically proven sun makes sound om that words come from Hindus
Srilankan Hindus eat meat most girls like vegetables but not men
    Veggies is easy to digest.

  16. 98 and this eloquent. Wow. Usually old people on standard western diet are like shaky when they talk at this stage of their life

  17. My grandmother's 101 and she is not a vegan, the only thing she limits in her lifetime, is white sugar. 💋

  18. AGE IS NOTHING BUT MATTTER OF THE MIND ♥ IT'S NEVER TO LATE TO TREAT YOUR BODY NICER ♥ keep your head's up and always stay strong and focused my brother's and sister's from another mother ♥

  19. Its not just the vegan diet ….. Its also keeping the sabbath day ….. which is saturday not sunday

  20. Eat shit loads of hot peppers! Get poop packed one every couple of days! And you will do well! Mean while giving g someone a hot cock! LOL!

  21. Meat causes cancer it’s also such bad energy especially in America they beat and slaughter our meat Bad energy we can feel

  22. Also, don't forget the hormones, pesticides, herbicides, plastics, etc. GMO frankenfoods.
Not just the amount of saturated fat, salt or sugar

  23. Diet has almost no effect on cholesterol levels. Even the FDA was forced to admit this a little over a year ago.

  24. The amount of pain animals suffer because we eat them must be horrible. That being said I am not a vegetarian.

  25. In my country, Indonesia, there is 140 year old man that omnivore, heavy smoker, and rarely eat fruits and vegetable. His name is Gotho. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mbah_Gotho

  26. Many peopl who aren't vegans live a very long life. Cancer can come to a vegan person just as likely as to a meat eater. My great grandma lived to be 98 years old. She always ate meat, she would eat chicken, red meat, all kinds of meat. She never had any cancer, no high blood pressure, no nothing. She was very energetic and happy. She believed in God. He is the one who gives you a longer life, not food. I've had vegan friends who have had 2 HEART ATTACKS IN A ROW. Makes you think, don't it?

  27. Quitting work at 95… 90 fucking 5 … god damn. At 98 years old he’s just as lively as a 70 year old, I’m going vegan this is incredible

  28. My grandfather will turn 99 in December and he has ate my grandmother's unhealthy cooking for 81 years and trust me everything had grease added to it or was fryed in grease and he still looks as healthy as this guy. Walking close to christ goes way beyond what any of these doctors know.

  29. He looks awesome plant based diet is definitely the way to a long-standing youthful life my 1 year vegan anniversary just passed 🙌🏾❤️

  30. Thanks doc! I quit smoking 11 months ago and I now excersize atleast every other day but I feel so much better and I'm strongly considering going vegan!

  31. Going vegan is nit of bull shit really. Me I eat at types of food meat fish eggs , veg.nut no dairy.some foods of vegan really gives me bad guts.peas cauliflower, leek , onions, cabbage, some grains, garlic, apples pears mangos, melon, chickpeas, lots more.so how can you vegans say it's good for you.be honest and say about side effects. I eat bit of everything thing

  32. 4:55 Try telling that to someone who didn't take to their mom's teets 🐧💕 on the other hand, it might be a good idea to go vegetarian in later years for some as it may balance out the effects of their previous lifestyle choices on their health (long shot) or it could compliment their changing health needs such as in the case of Alzheimer's and amyloid build up.

  33. I'm off this eating plan, and truly regret it.😞 I ate a plant based diet for two years and dropped considerable weight, my BP dropped to normal, and my joint aches completely subsided. I had TONS of energy too!

  34. This gentleman and this interview is inspiring and has inspired me . I need this style and intelligence to keep me on the vegan road . I find staying on a plant based diet a great challenge as nearly all my family and my social group are consume animal products.
I eat some butter and some skimmed milk and very small amounts of meats , this is part of the meals I eat when socialising . I want to cut this out as I am afraid that it is the thin wedge that will reintroduce my old diet that got me unwell . 3 years ago = eight 5ft 7in, weight 97kg cholesterol and kidney and liver and poor lung function, I turned that around by adhering to a vegan diet . All the markers are normal now my kidney and liver and my blood pressure and cholesterol , My weight has dropped to 82-83 kg . Now I am afraid of losing this health. Through this type of media which is a message that I can trust and know works It keeps me going towards a the better vegan diet and always cutting away the butter and the skimmed milk.
Without this I think I would relapse fully.

  35. He grew up on a farm, so everyday fresh eggs, milk and in summer fresh vegetables, don't underestimate the importance of nourishing our children!

  36. Top Vegan athlete here, high fruit. Whenever I get a blood test for fun, never sick anymore. I’m told I have the blood of a healthy young teen. I do not supplement, get plenty of sun, if not I eat more mushrooms and some vegan vitamin D, Vegan B12 sublingual. All meat eaters are deficient of B12 too.

  37. Dr Micheal Mc Gregor and Earthling Ed list research data. Top Surgeon Doctor Garth Davis is hot on all levels.
Spread the vegan word, it’s not just about diet any longer, but about us loosing oxygen in a alarming rate.
We need to get rid of all animal production facilities, which is the number one cause of man made methane gases zapping our oxygen.
The entire Vegan movement is creating millions of new jobs, we need all the plants to grow everywhere for our vegan foods to provide us oxygen.
Vegan billionaires like Elon Musk and Bill Gates, Sir Richard Branson and more know, if this world doesn’t become vegan in 10 years, we are toast. They are talking about year 2050 to avoid global panic.
Look and you will find already areas globally where without mask you can not breath.
    Look up MARS ONE PROGRAM.

  38. Been vegetarian for 2 years after watching "what the health". Then started to convert back to eating meat this year… I feel like crap. Back to the veggies I go
