For the longest time, milk was considered
a healthy food. Now it’s considered a poison. What’s the truth? Like with most things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. In this video, we’ll examine why
Ayurveda recommends milk and dairy products and why the dairy products on supermarket shelves are not good for you. Hi this is Livia with Healthy Happy and Wise bringing you the latest Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle tips. Let’s start with the Ayurvedic approach to milk. The Vedic civilization embraced the cow as a sacred animal which provided milk, cream, butter, and yogurt. In those days, cows were not bred for dairy production and their calves were not taken away from
them after birth. While they were raising their calves, only the extra milk not
drunk by the calves was used for human consumption. This kept the cow happy, which contributed to a high quality dairy product. Cows were also treated very well and grazed on healthy unpolluted lands. Dairy was fresh and free from chemicals and hormones. So this milk had many health
benefits. According to Ayurveda cow’s milk rejuvenates, nourishes, and
strengthens the body, promotes longevity soothes the mind, and balances the
emotions. Milk is also grounding and nourishing for Vata dosha due to its
sweet, heavy, and oily qualities. It promotes good sleep. It’s also balancing for Pitta due to its cooling and sweet qualities.
It can also help soothe burning sensations. It’s also very nourishing for the
reproductive tissues. Ayurveda identifies seven tissues: blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and the reproductive fluids. All the food we eat goes through these seven tissues in this order and takes about three to five days
to reach each tissue. So it will take a month before food nourishes all the
seven tissues. Milk, on the other hand, can go through this process in 24 hours
and get to the reproductive tissue. No other food can do that. Milk is a sattvic food, as opposed to meat which is rajasic and tamasic. The more sattvic a food is,
the more easily it is digested. Sattvic foods promote peacefulness and clarity of mind. Milk is also a good source of protein, calcium, vitamins A D and K.
According to Marianne Teitelbaum, an Ayurvedic practitioner, a vegan diet, even when it’s rich in leafy greens and nuts, cannot provide the body with enough
calcium. You need dairy and you need full-fat dairy because the fat in the milk
delivers the calcium to the bones. If remove the fat, the calcium won’t be
absorbed in the bones. The fat in the milk also helps the body
make cholesterol, which is needed for the skin to make vitamin D, and to support
the nerve tissues, the brain, and the adrenal glands. While dairy is balancing for Vata and Pitta, Kapha dosha can get clogged by
consuming too much dairy. So Kapha needs to eat less dairy than Vata and Pitta
people. Doctor Teitelbaum says that according to the ancient Ayurvedic texts, you need to have something from a cow with every meal. Not just once a day, with
every meal. This can be in the form of milk, yogurt, lassi, panir, or ghee. Cooking
your meals with ghee, which is clarified butter, is a good way to add the healthy
animal fats in your diet, even if you don’t eat any other dairy. Ghee doesn’t have any lactose so it’s suitable for most people as a cooking oil. There are
certain ethnic groups who are lactose intolerant, because they have no history of consuming dairy, so they never developed the enzymes to digest milk properly. But there are many people who are inherently not lactose intolerant; they just have difficulty digesting milk and dairy products. This is due to three problems: Number one. The way milk is processed
makes it difficult to digest. Especially homogenizeation makes it hard to absorb milk in the body. Number two. Most people’s digestion is compromised, they are low in digestive enzymes and their intestinal flora is out of balance.
So first the digestion needs to be improved before we can properly digest
milk. And number three, how we consume milk is also a problem. Many people drink it cold, straight out of the fridge. Ayurveda recommends warm milk. We also eat milk at the wrong time, and in combination with foods that are
not compatible with it. In our next episode we’ll cover how to consume milk and dairy the Ayurvedic way. For now, we can say that milk is healthy, if it’s consumed in its fresh natural form, preferably raw. Unfortunately, where I
live, it is illegal to sell raw milk. Your next best option is organic pasteurized milk from a small local dairy. In addition, fresh organic dairy products
such as yogurt, ricotta cheese, panir, and ghee are also healthy. You can make all
of these on your own, and we’ll be showing you how in upcoming episodes. Any other dairy may not be healthy, if it came from unhealthy unhappy cows eating GMO feed. And if it’s overly processed and loaded with sugar and other
additives. This dairy is difficult to digest and can clog your body and cause
problems. In conclusion, the answer to whether dairy is good for you depends on what kind of dairy you eat and how you eat it. Watch out for our next
