Taking Charge of Your Health

Now let’s welcome Dr. Ang Poon Liat consultant paediatrician surgeon of Thomson pediatric center to give us a presentation on the health benefits of ketogenic diet. Dr. Ang, please. Don’t be fooled by the fact that what goes in comes out, so that’s fine. It’s not true. The law of thermodynamics is not so accurate when it comes to weight management because once you lose your weight by 10% survival instinct kicks in and you’ll be craving for food so there must be something else that we can do to prevent weight accumulation because that is the basis of obesity. Now, there’re many diets in the market, but the one that’s closest to it is Atkins diet. And that’s what I think Momentum is based. I went through Momentum and I realized that there’re some ingredients, which i think is possibly in this direction. It is primarily a high-fat diet. We call it ketogenic diet. It also has some support cellular support, which are important because this cellular hunger is very powerful. It overwrites your determination. And there are ingredients inside, which actually calm your system so that you can continue your journey and maintain. Now, the key to this Momentum is actually ketogenic diet … it means ketone-based diet. So your first question is, what is ketogenic diet? This is different from the diabetic diet, which is called ketoacidosis. That is dangerous. It can kill you, but this is absolutely fine. Essentially, what is ketogenic diet? It is the original diet, right from the beginning of life. When we breastfeed, it is actually ketogenic diet. It’s a high fat. You’ve all your cream and butter and when we were hunters, we actually kill animals. The first thing we eat is the brain because it will rot. As for the muscle, we’ll hang it out to dry for famine times. And we take nuts and they are seasonal. We eat eggs and the fish that we can hunt. The plants are toxic. There’re no fire. To denature the toxins, you have to cook it so in those days, the (diet) are mainly ketogenic. In other words, they are actually on high fat diet and high protein diet. That’s Atkins diet. So what is this diet? It is high fat, low sugar and it’s meant to force the body to turn from sugar to fat (metabolism) …it’s much healthier and I’ll tell you why because we’re evolved to consume fat but unfortunately the fat we use nowadays are long chain which cannot reach the brain and you need the brain because when you feed you must feed not only your body, but your brain. So you have to convert the long chain into ketones by the liver. And only ketone is water-soluble. It gets to the brain and feed the brain. And that’s why when you sleep at night … from dinner at 6:00 pm till you wake up for breakfast at 6:00 am, there are 12 hours. Your glycogen is gone, you’re actually burning ketones. And when you fast over the weekends or you go into fasting, you’re on ketone diet. And most commonly, when you run marathon, after two hours, your glycogen sugar is bankrupt. You have to run on fat. You hit the wall. They call it ‘hit the wall’. You’ll feel terrible and your adrenaline comes out and it releases the fat and you run for next eight hours on ketones. Literally you are a ketone burner, when you’re running a marathon. So at the end of the journey you feel good. This shows that when you fast, you feel spiritual and you feel fine and that’s ketone so ketone is not a weird thing. It’s a real thing, if you sit down there for a whole day, you’re running on fat, you’re not running on sugar. Sugar is a standby nutrient. It’s for two things. There’s emergency sugar. It’s for emergency energy. In other words, if someone is trying to kill you, the sugar will give you the instant response and the second part is that the dangerous part. Excess is converted to fat and stored for reserve for rainy days. And nature give us this reserve to help us during those days when there’s famine and all that. But where’s famine now? How are we short of food? You go to the supermarket, you’ll get everything you want. And we are loading and loading and loading and that’s why obesity is rising… … Just now when she said, the first speaker said, it is addictive. Right? This happened 10,000 years ago when we started agricultural revolution. We start growing grains because the ancestors have to travel to where the food is. It’s difficult for survival. If you have the wrong hit, wrong occasion, you’ll die, so they started farming because there’s stability. You can store, you can trade grains, but they forgot one thing and now we realized that carbohydrate coming from grains and seeds are addictive, so we love bread. We love noodles. We love everything that has sugar and that’s why we are now in epidemic. So what’s wrong with sugar? I mean, you are, all of us are, well not me but all of us are sugar burners. Ideally, we must be fat burners. We have evolved over 10,000 years into sugar burners. We are carbohydrate addicts and we talk about addiction to cigarettes and alcohol. However, these are minor. It’s covers only a small fraction of us. Most of are carbohydrates addicts. It is the world’s number one legal addiction. When I say that glucose is toxic, a lot you are surprised by that. Because it is, so nature has produced insulin to keep it down. If you eat a heavy carbohydrates diet, your sugar goes up and your insulin will go up to bring it (sugar) right down because it’s going to poison your body and I’ll tell you why. First, the whole idea of it, sugar is energy. If you’re hyperactive or you’ve some disorder, you’ll have mood swings… In the mornings, you’ll take sugar. It (blood sugar level) goes up you feel good you go to work by mid-morning your sugar goes down, which is driven by insulin and you go into depression, anxiety and lethargy. Then you must have what they call a ‘pick me up’ again at mid-morning. Have a cup of coffee which is a stimulant, which is not right. Or if you take something like snacks and that give you another boost and you go onto a lunch time and then tea time and dinner time and fortunately you’ll sleep. But it needs to be boosted. Otherwise you get moody, so this up hyperactive, down depression, is typical of carbohydrate addicts. Number two, because it is up and down the brain cell is the one that get the hardest hit because your mood is a brain problem and as a result, you’ll find that if you have a tendency to fit you throw fits and if you have a mood problem, you have behavior disorder. Some of the crimes are done because of this mood changes… He’s a sugar addict. Of course here today, we’re talking about excessive sugar were converted to fat and this is what nature designed to make sure that you have reserves. And of course, with increased insulin, you could end up with insulinemia, insulin resistance. You’ve diabetes, you have metabolic syndrome which has been elaborated earlier and of course you increase metabolism, you burn more. You’ve more inflammation, you end up a chronic inflammatory disease, so sugar actually are inflammatory agents. And of course, it stimulates insulin. It stimulates IGF growth hormone. That’s one. And it pushes in proliferation, cell proliferation and cancer. And you know, …Sugar is food for cancer cells. And you go and do a PET scan. For an example, you have a cancer you go and see a doctor. I better check you to know which stage you are in, whether you are stage 1 or stage 2 or stage 4. They put you in a PET scan. Do you know what a PET scan is? It is based on this concept that sugar is cancer food. The cancer cell has six times more affinity for sugar than normal cells. So when you go and do the scan, they take your blood. They give a glucose tech with an isotope . They give you some insulin with the isotope. And do you know who bites it first? The cancer cells take the first bite. With 6 times more affinity, and you scan it, there you are! Caught! That’s how you scan it. That’s based on this principle that sugar is cancer food. If you have cancer, please don’t touch sugar because you are feeding the system. Now of course, the last, (sugar) is food for fungus and bacteria. If you take a lot of sugar you are going to get sick often because you are fanning the proliferation of this organism. So we’ve come to next question. Is ketogenic diet, therefore, good or bad? Is it dangerous? Without sugar, you have three benefits. Of course, today we’re talking about healing obesity. If you stop accumulation (of sugar) straight away and you’ll starve cancer cells, if you’ve cancer. And of course a lot of us benefit from the third one. It calms your brain, you’re very cool, you’re not swinging. There’re no mood swings because it doesn’t stimulate insulin. Therefore, there’s no mood swing. And therefore, you’ll be in a steady state so when you go fasting, you’re very calm. And you’re very spiritual because it’s steady. And when you’re resting, you’re on, actually, fat diet and you’re steady, but when you run, exert, you must have (emergency) sugar because emergency sugar is our energy source that (you must have when running). So coming to the third part, what sort of things do we eat? There are basically three grades. For me, I’m on this diet called “low glycemic diet” because you want to cut down on sugar but I’m not fat. I don’t have a problem. (All you’ll have to do is trim down ) your fat intake, which means you go a bit low on your starch intake, go for low glycemic index food go low in your fructose you can maintain your calories because your in and out is adequate. So the first thing is don’t accumulate fat. Keep it status quo and of course you’ll have to replace energy. Let it come from fat. so your fat ratio to the protein and carbohydrates is about one to one. And you should moderate your protein. I’ll tell you why. Protein also makes you accumulate weight. So you can go long term (on this diet). No problem. You can do yourself. It’s very easy and that’s the diet. Now, but if you have obesity, it’s slightly different you need to reduce, not only maintain, you must reduce a little bit to trim down so you had one more component in the same section. It’s “reduce fat reserves”. So you trim down your calorie intake per day by 60 to 70%, so it’s a slow burning out of your reserve. Alright? Because of that, you’ll need a nutritionist like (those we have) here to help you to moderate your your performance, your biochemistry because it does have some impact on you. Because, if you remember, you’ve been a sugar burner for all these years. When you change to fat metabolism , fat burner, there’re some chemistry changes because you’re adapting and you must be monitored for a short while. But it’s very safe, you can go on long term, for life. Now, of course, if you’ve a disease, obesity and other problems e.g. heart disease, hypertension and your BMI is more than 40, you’re on a diet state. You have to do it fast and you must do it well. Otherwise, you might die from either heart attack, hypertension, strokes or cancer so you have to go for a quick job. And this is a classical ketogenic diet. We use it for treating cancer, for fits, for alzheimer’s and all of these stuff. It just shows that sugar causes all this and when you reverse to fat, all these reserves will go down. Alright? Now, because this is a very aggressive treatment, you need to be monitored properly by a doctor to check your biochemistry. And there’s a downswing so you have to monitor this. So what’s the benefits? Well, of course, the first most important thing is bring down insulin. There’s no swings or insulin resistance goes (down), the obesity goes down, diabetes goes down and this clears up. Alright, type II diabetes. Of course, you’ll knocked out your leptin resistance, your appetite begins to become more balanced. You eat, when you need to, and not eat for comfort or for other reason. And of course, you cut down burning. Less energy spent, which means less oxidative stress. Therefore, less inflammation. Inflammation (cause) accumulation of 10% of your fluid weight. So normally when you go on diet, you lose, actually, water weight, which is 10%. Well, that’s only a beginning of the journey, the real thing is the next 10%. That’s tough. Alright, so most diet (program marketers) may tell you, you’ll get 10% off in the first one month but be careful alright, you’ll want it to last beyond that (one month period). This diet, Momentum, has a sustaining effect. It keeps you going downwards. Most diet programs play this trick, where 10% is guaranteed. Sure enough, it did, but actually it is clearing inflammation water, which is 10%. Input the right chemistry, the sugar goes down. It’s good for you. I’ll tell you why, because sugar causes a glycation end-product. That’s the beginning of your degeneration and ageing. Now of course, insulin is good for you. Lower your inflammation. What’re the side effects? What’s the downside? The downside is, when you go into a new diet. There’s a bit of constipation. The bowel get a bit sticky and a little bit more
bulky. You get mild acidosis because of ketosis. But it’s very mild and is transient. And
they told me, when they start changing the diet a little bit, … you’ll find that it will be resolved. You’ll go a bit low on sugar, initially. You’ll feel hungry. You’ll be craving but after a while your body adapt to a low (sugar) level. It’s like we say, okay, I’ve not
taken any sugar in my coffee. Initially, you find difficult. After a while, you’ll find that the taste is so good that you find that you cannot tolerate sugar. This called
adaptation. Alright, low insulin-like growth factor.
Although it has some side effects on the child, the plus point is cut down proliferation and cancer. Remember that. Alright, it raised a little bit of triglyceride, a bit of cholesterol because you are eating mainly fat and fat tend to have this
effect on your system. Alright, it is the composition of fat. And, but again, this is transient. The cholesterol is alright, provided it is natural, not
oxidized. That’s the trick. Alright, so where you get this stuff? When we talk about ketogenic diet, we talk about food. Now here’s a list of food for you. And of course I
think the momentum has a list of food that they advise too. But in principle,
this other diet short chain, medium chain, virgin coconut
oil. That’s the best. That’s a very powerful ketogenic diet and because it’s short, it
burns up very fast. It goes to ketones and send to the brain and some of these can even enter the brain itself to help you to give instant sustenance. Long chain
like virgin oil and all these nuts and beans and seeds and corn are all your
long-chain. It’s little bit more difficult. (They) can’t get into your brain. Unfortunately, the liver has to convert them into ketones to get into the brain, by making it water-soluble and smaller molecules. Right then, the brain can utilize it. So the brain can use three
things – ketones, sugar and glutamine, which is a protein. Cancer cells consume glutamine and sugar but they can’t take in or assimilate ketones. That’s why when you go on ketone diet for
cancer, you actually starve them to death. First, you don’t give them sugar. Given ketones, the (cancer cells) can’t take it. They will die of starvation. Alright, saturated fats like butter and
cream is fine again. It will converted. And of course, there’re essential amino acids. And this is where Momentum supplement is supportive. If you go on your own, you’ll miss it. You’ll diet and all that but you’ll find that you tend to play
calorie games. It’s not good enough. There’re certain factors and some vitamins to
cut down cellular hunger. And that’s powerful because it keeps you
going and keep you sustained. So things like the co-factor amino acids minerals like
magnesium, zinc are part of intra-cellular mitochondrial
function ingredients for burning of fat, especially L-carnitine. So in conclusion, obesity is caused by fat accumulation and fat accumulation is caused by fructose. Fructose is a killer. Actually we
all thought that sugar is the culprit but sugar is not really a key culprit. Fructose is
nature’s secret weapon to make you accumulate. Let me tell you a story. In winter, we are hunters and fruits only comes out (in hotter seasons). Fructose is about fruits right? It comes out only in late summer/autumn. (During which) the fruits are there and the animals will eat them. And they hibernate over winter. They can last because the accumulation of fat is about double their weight. And they go to
diabetic status. And they go into the cave. Take the bear for an example, they hibernate for three months. Then comes spring, they lose all the fat. They are
back to square one, scrawny. Life starts again. In other words, unlike us, the
animals turn on, turn off. Humans turn on and stays on. There’s a difference.
Okay, so that’s why they live long but we don’t. We suffer from the disease of
fat accumulation… Glucose is easily burnt. Fructose cannot be burned off. It has to be converted into glucose before it can be used. So it’s a little bit difficult and
the byproduct of fructose metabolism is uric acid, which is the nature’s secret way of turning on glucose accumulation. Glucose is like that. Fructose creating uric acid is the one that push 100% into fat accumulation. You understand that it is the secret that turn on this so-called fat accumulation project. It is part of nature, fruits come in autumn. To turn whatever the bear eats into fat storage. So please, don’t eat
sweet fruits. I know that in the market, (the vendors) always tell you, the fruit is very good. It’s very sweet. So you’ll buy them. Or something we ask them, sweet or not? Sweet! Okay. We are (attracted to) sweetness. This is because sweetness is a powerful taste that nature design for us to chase after sweetness. This is because sweet means sugar. Sugar means energy storage
reserved for future famine. That is the instinct that we are driven. You can’t
control that. Unless you learn how to desensitized your tongue. (To achieve) weight reduction, limit fructose, sugar and fructose syrup, especially high fructose corn syrup. Earlier on, you saw the video clip about
the US government financing obesity. Do you know where it goes to? It goes to corn farming. Much of it goes to high fructose corn
syrup, which you add into all your drinks, all your food. And do you know why? It is because sugar is expensive whereas corn syrup is cheap. And (high fructose corn syrup) is much sweeter. Sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. The high fructose corn syrup (compose) of 60% fructose, so it’s sweeter. Therefore, they can use less and it’s so cheap because it’s mass-produced and subsidized by the government. And they flood the world with
this. Well it’s a Japanese creation but Japanese are smart. They don’t use it. The
American use it. And we are in this trouble now because you can’t control. It’s a market force that is forcing them to switch on from sugar to high fructose corn syrup. Now, glucose reduction is simple. Cut down the carbohydrates, cut down the starch and use proteins. Proteins. Look up at point number 2. Branch-chain amino acids. Because on this chain, there are 8 essential amino acid and three of them are able
to stimulate insulin and also can stimulate mTOR which actually simulate cell proliferation that means you put on cells, you put on weight. That’s what
it does so don’t underrate protein. In moderation, protein, don’t eat too much.
It’s good for you. Cut down your cancer and don’t feed your obesity, okay?
Therefore, ketogenic diet will crack all this for you. And that’s why this diet is
the nearest so far, other than Atkin. Atkin does give you a guide. You can go into it. But this one has a package. I am not a promoter for it. I just telling you that, in this market, this is something that a lot of people can actually go ahead and do it. Thank you. Just a bit of my commercial time. I
told him that you know, what’s my kickback coming to talk. Well, this
information is taken from my book which I’ve written. It’ll be coming out in July the
first. It’s a gift of two books set. The book is called The Wonders of
Nutrition. It tells you three component your genes, how your body behave… Tell you about the healing lifestyle and what you
must do correctly… The 2nd part is about nutrition. And the 2nd part has two sub-sections. We know the benefits of the food we eat
but we forget that the dark side of food. We must know what because cause
inflammation and diseases. So when you have the right food, with the right genes
and the right lifestyle, you have optimal health. Despite of that, all of us
still fall through the crack, like obesity allergy and all of that. The 2nd book is
called a Roadmap to Recovery to tell you some of the diseases that nutrition can help you to recover. These two books are all about nutrition. There’s no medicine here. Alright, so if you are a person who likes Naturopathy. And you want to go on the natural way. God has made everything there for you. You must have the
knowledge to hunt for it and use it. And this book will give you a guidance so
these will be coming out soon. It’s dedicated to mothers because mother is concerned with family well-being and hold the key to nutrition. And of course,
to humanity we depend on our mothers really. Thank you. you
