Hey guys, Dr. Axe here, Doctor of Functional
Medicine. What I’m going to share with you today is natural remedies for thyroid health. There are more people than ever before that
are struggling with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, hyperthyroidism, Grave’s disease. If you personally are one of those people
that have a sluggish thyroid, a slow metabolism, maybe you exercise and the weight doesn’t
come off like you should, if you struggle with adrenal fatigue or lack of energy, all
of those are warning signs that you might have a thyroid issue. In this video, I’m going to cover my top five
natural remedies that are safe, healthy, and effective for improving your thyroid function
and helping your body heal any sort of thyroid issue. So for starters, the number one home remedy
you need or natural remedy you need, to start to support the thyroid is ashwagandha. Ashwagandha
is known as an adaptogenic herb. Adaptogen herbs mean they help you adapt and deal with
stress, and ashwagandha has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. Other adaptogenic herbs can include things
like tulsi or holy basil, also things like rhodiola and ginseng and liquorice root. All
of those are adaptogen herbs, but ashwagandha may be the most effective at naturally supporting
overall thyroid health, especially hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. In fact, on the studies on it, it was actually
shown to help both hyper and hypothyroid symptoms, which is amazing how ashwagandha works. The number two thing you should consider adding
in to overall improve your thyroid function is selenium. Selenium is critical, it actually
has very, very powerful antioxidant-like functions. So it is critical for overall supporting your
thyroid health. In fact, studies have shown that selenium helps balance out T4 in your
body hormones, so again taking a therapeutic dose of selenium everyday has also been shown
to benefit thyroid function. The next thing you want are certain types
of B vitamins if you want to improve thyroid function. There are two specifically I want
to mention, and that’s thiamine and vitamin B12. So thiamine and vitamin B12 are two B
vitamins you need that can actually improve thyroid function. If somebody is especially on a vegan or vegetarian
diet, they’re absolutely going to be deficient in vitamin B12 and also are likely to be deficient
in thiamine as well. So again, thiamine and vitamin B12 are also critical. Those are natural
remedies number three. Four and five include probiotics. You know,
probiotics are critical for digestive function. In fact, thyroid conditions have also been
linked to a health problem called leaky gut. That’s where… Leaky gut is where a protein
like gluten can leak through the gut, get in the blood stream, and cause inflammation
throughout the body, but also it can cause inflammation of the thyroid gland. So again,
healing a leaky gut is also important, probiotics the number one supplement for that. And then last, but not least, proteolytic
enzymes. Enzymes reduce inflammation, especially if you have an autoimmune-related thyroid
condition like Hashimoto’s disease, taking proteolytic enzymes like bromelain can reduce
inflammation of the thyroid. If you can do those five natural remedies
that I mentioned, you’re going to see great results in thyroid function. Sometimes you
can even find a blended formula as well with all of those ingredients in it that can support
thyroid and adrenal gland function. So again, really take care of your thyroid,
if you have any of those issues I mentioned, especially issues with your metabolism and

  1. Dr Axe, I looked at your link for diet to improve thyroid function. I've had hypothyroidism for 12 years I'm on Armor thyroid medicine and have been for 7 years. This has produced stable reading for my TSH and T3, and T4 levels. I am a vegetarian also for 7 years due to gastritis and ibs. I would like to talk with you further about my diet and what I need to add to it that I'm not already to improve energy levels and emotional support. I do b12 shots and a daily liquid of b12. I also do the garden of life primal defense probiotic. I take a quality liquid multi vitamin and I drink alot of water as well as juicing for snacks and part of meals. I think I'm headed in the right direction, but additional guidance is appreciated.

I live in Pakistan and most of the things you mention to heal my thyroid are not available . Here and is very polluted and dust is all around . Many essential oils you mention are not present here . I don't want thyroid to aggravate so can you some how aid me ?

I would never believe anyone on YouTube trying to advice us for something as serious as thyroid problems.   15. here's several suggestions for hypothyroidism
    Make sure you rest your feet
    Try Wearing supportive footwear
    Use ice on your heel
    Try ibuprofen or another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to lessen pain and inflammation
    try night splints
    Try stretching and strengthening exercises.

  17. Thank you for a great video! The thyroid needs iodine rich foods, too. So eating lots of sea vegetation like kelp, dulse, and yummy green sushi wrappers are great to add to your diet.

I do all they say. I am still hypothyroid and need to take Thyrogold (which is a doctor made substitute for Synthroid, available on the net.) Stick to what really helps and don't give false hope, Dr. Axe.

    And the best things of all that you can do for your thyroid is to totally avoid even minute amounts of soy. Soy can be hidden in many food products and even is in some supplement capsules.

Dr. Axe… my son is 23 months old and he has café – au- lait spots all over his neck…they are dark brown spots…smooth….some of them are large some of them a small..but it bothers me because people stare and I know it doesn't bother him now …but I know it will bother him later …I was wondering if there is anything else that can be done to remove them…

  26. Thanks for both the quick videos, & the more in depth vids. I'm working really hard at getting my thyroid healthy without Rx drugs (my body won't tolerate) and juggling several difficult & very different health conditions that disqualify me from many wonderful healing options (e.g. avocados, ginger, green/black tea, bananas, ect.) I also cannot tolerate any factory fats. So its heavy cream, ghee, coconut oil, butter or animal fat.

  27. Thank you SO much Dr Axe for this. Just discovered I have hyperthyroidism, and have been taking lots of Sea Kelp which has only made things worse. So will most definitely try your suggestions. I know that Leaky Gut as you said is at the root of my problems.

  28. Hi Dr Axe please can u make this clear as the more I research on it, the more nostalgic I feel about incorporating selenium into my dietary supplement. These days the 200mg seems to be the recognized dosage for a lot of brands when it comes to selenium, and I read your articles in relations to dosage per day for women which is really low. I just want to know if it is safe to take 200mg of selenium per day for hair growth cause I know an overdose can lead to hair loss. Thank you for your time.

  33. I do/did have thyroid complications. I actually had a lump in my throat which is no longer there. I also had nodles on my thyroid which after my most recent ultrasound scan is no longer there. I guess i need to keep an eye on it, but i'm thankful that a lot of the symptoms are gone and hopefully for good.
    im not sure how they went away but i drink alot of ginger and tumeric tea to fight inflammation. i also started using more coconut oil in my cooking. I consume natto beans about once or twice a months.
