[Rumbling gut sounds] Irritable Bowel Syndrome
is a chronic gut disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation.
IBS affects up to 1 in 5 Australians and around 11 percept of the world’s population. The
noisy guts project is the brainchild of Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall. He had
the idea of applying acoustic sensing technology designed to pick up the sounds of tiny munching
termites to the human guts. Our research demonstrates a strong correlation between gut noise patterns
and specific gut disorders. Our acoustic belt records gut noises over time so doctors can
accurately screen and diagnose gut disorders.
